Choosing the perfect One Gallon Brewing kit takes a little research. So, I’m sharing my notes as I try to build the best small batch brew kit. First I took a look through several kits to figure out what the key components were. I looked through a few standard brew kits to identify the common brewing equipment.

Northern Brewer 1 Gallon Small Batch Home Beer Brewing Kit

The Northern Brewer kit contains:

  • 1-Gallon Fermentation Jug
  • Jug Cap
  • Airlock
  • Mini Siphon and Tubing
  • Bottle Filler
  • 8 oz Easy Clean Cleanser
  • Bottle Capper and Pry-Off Caps
  • A recipe kit
  • A DVD “Homebrewing 100: The Small Batch Way”

To make beer with this beer brewing kit you’ll also need a 2-gallon kettle, some bottles, a thermometer and some measuring cups. Using the provided beer kits makes it easy to get the ingredients right.

The kit contains a few things that are not necessary. If you use flip-top bottles you won’t need the bottle capper and the caps. If you are reading this page you have internet and probably don’t need the Homebrewing DVD. I don’t even have a DVD player at home anymore. Northern Brewers Youtube channel has many helpful brewing videos.

Micro Bru All Grain Beer Brewing Starter Kit

This Micro Bru kit contains:

  • 1-Gallon Jug Fermentor With Cap
  • 3 Piece Airlock
  • Oxygen Wash Cleanser
  • Thermometer
  • Bottle Capper
  • Bottle Caps
  • Bottle Filler
  • Racking Cane
  • 3/8″ Tubing (3 feet)
  • 5/16″ Tubing (3 feet)
  • Your Choice Of Recipe Kit
  • Instruction Packet

To make beer with this beer brewing kit you’ll also need two 2-gallon kettle, some bottles, and some measuring cups. Unlike the Northern Brewing kit, this Micro Bru contains a thermometer and a racking cane. Also, Micro Bru provides a nearly fool-proof beer kit to makes it easy to get the ingredients right.

Brooklyn Brew Shop All Grain Beer Making Kit

This Brooklyn Brew Shop kit contains:

  • All-Grain Ingredient Mix
  • Gallon (3.8 L) Glass Fermenter
  • Glass Spirit-Filled Thermometer
  • Vinyl Tubing
  • Racking Cane & Tip
  • Chambered Airlock
  • Brooklyn Brew Shop Cleanser
  • Screw-Cap Stopper

I like this kit because it doesn’t contain any “optional” equipment. For example, I don’t really need or want a bottle capper. To make beer with this beer brewing kit you’ll also need a 2-gallon kettle, some bottles, a capper and caps (if you don’t use flip-top bottles), a thermometer and some measuring cups. Using the provided beer kits makes it easy to get the ingredients right.

Mini Monster Bookshelf Brewery

This Mini Monster Brew kit contains:

  • India Pale Ale Beer Ingredients
  • 1 Gallon Glass Fermenter
  • Racking Cane & Siphon Tubing
  • Airlock & Mini-Drilled Stopper
  • Laboratory Thermometer
  • Sanitizer
  • Detailed Easy-to-Follow Instructions

I like this kit because it doesn’t contain any “optional” equipment. For example, I don’t really need or want a bottle capper. To make beer with this beer brewing kit you’ll also need a 2-gallon kettle, some bottles, a capper and caps (if you don’t use flip-top bottles), a thermometer and some measuring cups. Using the provided beer kits makes it easy to get the ingredients right.

What is needed for small batch brewing?

Here’s a short list of the equipment necessary to get brewing in small batches:

  • Siphon
  • Hydrometer
  • Thermometer
  • Hose
  • Bottle Filler
  • Bottles / Caps / Capper
  • Test Jar
  • Airlock
  • Stopper
  • Funnel
  • Carbonation Drops
  • Spoon
  • Cleanser

Then there’s this! I like bottling beer as much as the rest of you (how about not at all…). Small batch brewing almost always means bottling your brew — and bottling often because you are making smaller batches. So, what about throwing a small keg in the mix? The Micro Bru 1-Gallon All-Grain starter kit with the Draft Brewer® Cannonball® keg is the next level in small batch brewing.

Which micro brew kit is the best?

If you are just getting started any of the basic kits will work fine. If you are are the “average” brewer that becomes an addict you may want to build your own kit with all the right equipment. We’ll share our perfect microbrew kit in a future post. But the short answer to the best 1-gallon brew kit is the Northern Brew kit. All you really need to add is a kettle, thermometer and measuring cups. If your kitchen doesn’t already have those then there is a chance you’ll have trouble boiling water!
